Training starts, Zico absent


Training for the crucial World Cup qualifier with Japan began on Monday evening in Baghdad led by assistant coach Edu Coimbra, coach Basil Gorgis and fitness trainer Moraci Santanna. Zico yet to arrive in Baghdad was absent from the first day of training that featured only 20 players.

Crisis ends as Zico rings changes


After a meeting with FA officials on Monday, Zico has declared his commitment to Asood Al-Rafidain for another year and made changes in his 27 man squad for the World Cup qualifying clash with Japan on September 11 in Saitama. The Brazilian confirmed that problems with the FA and his salary had been resolved and would begin training from August 25.

The Iraq FA had named a 32 man preliminary squad for the World Cup qualifier in Saitama but after talks were held with Zico on Monday, the Brazilian has selected five new players David Haider of Hallescher FC, Ali Abdul-Jabar (Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya), Khaldoun Ibrahim (Al-Zawraa), Samar Saeed (Al-Naft) and Hussam Ibrahim (Al-Shurta)

Zico to arrive on Sunday


Brazilian Zico is expected to arrive in Baghdad on Sunday to hold a meeting with the Iraq FA over renewing his contract for another year as well as discussing Iraq’s preparations for their forthcoming World Cup qualifier with Japan.

He will attend a friendly match between the Iraq B team managed by Hadi Mutanash and the Iraq U-20s side in Baghdad before jetting back to Rio. Zico will return on August 23 to start training in Baghdad and then travel to Sulimaniya on August 27. From September 1, the Iraqi team will begin a training camp in Seoul, where they may play a warm-up match with a K-League club.

32 players called up for World Cup qualifier with Japan on September 11.


The Iraq FA has named seven new players for the training camp that will commence on August 20.

The players are Jalal Hassan (Karbala), Mohanad Qasim (Al-Talaba), Ammar Abdul-Hussein (Al-Minaa), Osama Rashid (Unattached), and four players from newly crowned league champions Arbil, Nabil Sabah, Hulgard Mulla Mohammed, Hussein Abdul-Wahid and Amjad Radhi.
