Former Iraq coach Jorge Vieira passes away

The great Brazilian Jorge Vieira the first and currently only trainer to guide Iraq to a World Cup finals passed away in Rio on July 24 after suffering a heart attack.

In a career that spanned 59 years as both a player and a coach, he won the Campeonato Carioca with América FC, the Paulista Championship with Corinthians twice in 1979 and 1983, and the Baiano Championship with three clubs, Bahia, Vitória and Galícia.

His first title was the Campeonato Carioca in 1960 with América FC, when he was only 26, and won the league title twice in Mexico with Club América in the 1980s.

He retired from playing at the age of only 24 to concentrate on coaching on a full-time basis and went onto manage 29 clubs in Brazil, Portugal, Mexico and the national teams of Iraq and Elsavador, guiding Iraq to the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.
