Former Iraq player Abbas Rahim tragically killed in car crash


Former Iraq midfielder Abbas Rahim was tragically killed in a car crash on Friday morning on the road from Baghdad to Al-Najaf.

The 35 year-old died at the scene with his fellow passenger, before they reached the Al-Kifal Hospital.

The talented two-footed star of both Al-Shurta and Al-Zawraa had retired in 2006 after a persistent injury he picked up playing in Syria and was pursuing a full-time career in coaching.

Abbas Rahim made 35 appearances for Iraq from 1999 to 2003 playing at the 2000 Asian Cup finals and scored the last of his four goals for the national side on his last ever appearance against Myanmar. He also represented the Iraqi Under 17s and 19s and the Olympic side.
