Younis Mahmoud made his return to the national team in the game with Tunisia on Sunday and scored albeit after a foul on the goalkeeper. He had returned with a goal.
The boy from Dibbis netted his 42 goal in 109 international matches for the national side. Some claim his experience is needed in the squad but at the 29 (he is actually 34) year-old, the forward is a shadow of his former self, gone are the days when he could win matches single handed and along with it has his pace and fitness. This is not the Younis of 2007, that won the Asian Cup in Jakarta while Iraq are no longer the champions of Asia a title that many of fans still claim.
His performances at the Gulf Cup and the results of the team in Manama will judge if Younis is truly back or that his goal against Tunisia was his last hurrah in an Iraqi jersey.
